Do you know this line from Grey’s Anatomy? I still remember when it was first uttered by Dr. Cristina Yang to Dr. Meredith Grey. In the early days of Grey’s, we watched it with my best friend Michelle and her husband, Zach. Before we had children. Before we had busy lives. Before any real heartache would strike us.
With these words, spoken by fictional television characters, I knew that Michelle was my person. I knew, without a doubt, that God had given Michelle and I the blessing of friendship and “personship.” Being someone’s person is a big deal. This is the person who will be there for you no matter what. You can have a huge fight, you can go years without speaking, you can move, anything that person will still be there.
I saw another quote from the show that was Meredith saying, “We’re friends. Real friends. And that means no matter how long it takes, when you do decide to look back, I’ll still be here.”
I’ll be sharing more about Michelle in the weeks to come. She is fighting for her life against stage IV breast cancer. I always thought we’d be the Golden Girls together. I thought we would be together to see our children’s children get married. But I’ll take all the time God allows me with her. She’s my person.
